When to Fertilize Your Lawn in Central Virginia

A month-by-month fertilization guide for fescue, Bermuda, and zoysia lawns in Lynchburg, Amherst, and the surrounding Central Virginia region.

Central Virginia lawns face a unique challenge: our growing season covers both cool-season grasses like tall fescue and warm-season grasses like Bermuda and zoysia. Each type has its own peak growth window — and fertilizing at the wrong time wastes product and can actually weaken the turf.

For tall fescue lawns (the most common in Lynchburg, Forest, and Amherst), the two best fertilization windows are early September and early November. A heavier nitrogen application in fall builds deep roots that survive Virginia's hot summers far better than spring feeding alone.

For Bermuda and zoysia, hold off until the lawn is fully green and actively growing — usually mid-May here in Central Virginia. Apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer every 4–6 weeks through August, then stop. Late fertilization on warm-season grass invites disease.

If you're not sure what type of grass you have, look closely at the blade texture and check whether your lawn turns brown in winter (warm-season) or stays green (cool-season). Or call us — we can identify it on a quote visit and build a fertilization plan that matches.
