Best Mowing Height for Lynchburg Lawns
Mowing height is the single biggest lever for a healthy lawn. Here's how to set it right for Central Virginia grass types and seasons.
If you only change one thing about your lawn care this year, change your mowing height. Most homeowners cut their grass too short — and short grass means shallow roots, weed pressure, and faster drought stress.
For tall fescue, the sweet spot in Central Virginia is 3.5 to 4 inches. That extra height shades the soil, retains moisture, and crowds out crabgrass before it can germinate.
Bermuda and zoysia prefer shorter cuts — typically 1 to 2 inches — but should still follow the one-third rule: never remove more than one-third of the blade in a single mowing.
Sharp blades matter just as much as height. A dull blade tears the grass, leaving a frayed brown tip that invites disease. We sharpen our mower blades on a strict schedule for exactly this reason.
